THRIVE Venture Studio Manager

The Venture Studio is THRIVE’s “next big thing” in continuing its mission to advance food and agriculture for a more sustainable future. THRIVE has invested and accelerated over 85 agrifood startups around the world. Now, it will create companies from the ground up, leveraging market insights and partnerships across its global innovation platform, starting in the bustling agtech innovation ecosystem of Alberta, Canada.

 The Venture Studio Manager will report to the Director of Venture Studio & will be responsible for supporting the development and execution of the new SVG Ventures | THRIVE Venture Studio. The expectation for this role is that the individual filling it leverages a strong entrepreneurial background, propensity for crafting viable early-stage business concepts, and working with organizations of all sizes to create value. This includes but is not limited to global opportunity identification in agrifood markets, broad IP sourcing and evaluation, tapping founder ecosystems for team formation, startup scouting and evaluation, and employing a variety of new venture development processes and techniques. You are a futurist, a big picture thinker who thrives in day-to-day execution toward long-term visions. You have excellent people skills, business acumen, courage to try new things, and are driven by curiosity.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Co-develop the strategic plan for the Venture Studio, including the business plan, financial model, resource model, and operational considerations, including systems, processes, and infrastructure.
  • Plan and coordinate a phased launch for the Venture Studio beginning in 2022.
  • Manage & prioritize a top-of-the-funnel opportunity backlog leveraging insights from across THRIVE’s global ecosystem.
  • Identify promising IP in research partner portfolios and build access to other IP sources across THRIVE’s ecosystem.
  • Further develop Venture Studio playbook, identifying and translating best practice examples globally. 
  • Build and manage a founder talent pipeline, via direct applications & informally across THRIVE’s ecosystem, securing well-matched, top notch founder(s) for new venture concepts.
  • Serve as point of contact for companies launched through the venture studio, connecting companies to appropriate supporting resources and supporting early-stage validation activities on a limited basis.
  • Supports licensing opportunities, funding sources, potential spin-outs, or other “exit” partnerships for venture studio explorations, including creation of pitch decks and diligence materials for potential partners.
  • Coordinate Studio governance model, liaising with partner stakeholders to drive venture formation approval, funding, and/or discontinuation.

 

REQUIREMENTS & QUALIFICATIONS

  • Advanced educational degree in technical agriculture field, business administration, computer & data science, or a related field.
  • Demonstrable experience founding or playing a meaningful role in scaling an early stage start up.
  • 5+ years work experience in agriculture preferable.
  • Strong ability to communicate scientific and business strategy concepts, including through memos, reports, and slide decks.
  • Demonstrable ability to quickly digest a wide variety of technical concepts to identify high potential sources of commercial & impact value in the market.
  • Comfortable in a dynamic work environment, collaborating with multiple stakeholders within THRIVE and THRIVE partner organizations.
  • Familiarity with building financial models, pitch decks, and other materials to support licensing and partnership opportunities.
  • Experience writing grant applications, preferably related to commercialization.
  • Propensity for team building & rallying stakeholders around a common goal & vision.
  • Willingness to travel to build Venture Studio partnerships.
